INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 13, 2015
  • location   Razorback Trail, Windy Hill Open Space Preserve (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Orchidaceae
  • notes   Habit of a Piperia just shy of flowering. Other nearby plants in the population had begun to flower, and are shown in subsequent images of this series. [Thanks go to Anna (AKA 'New York' :-), Frank, and other CNPS field trip participants for spotting these interesting plants.]

Using my thumbnail (15mm) as a reference in the 4th image of this series, I measured the spur at about 6.5mm, so this keys to P. transversa in the Jepson eFlora Piperia key...a horizontally tranverse spur can be seen at the top of the 3rd image in the series (though it's small there). Note the large number of flowering stem bracts (6 to 10, see 2nd & 3rd images). The key and discussion in Coleman's 'The Wild Orchids of California' and the FNA key and description all support P. transversa here. (Although I don't think the viscidia are visible in any of my photos....just the pollinia, if I understand things correctly.)
