INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 17, 2003
  • location   Eureka Dunes (Inyo County, California, US)
  • family Euphorbiaceae
  • synonyms Chamaesyce ocellata ssp. arenicola
  • plant community   Sand Dunes
  • notes   This plant features the remarkable and unusual floral structure associated with the genus Chamaesyce and many other members of the family Euphorbiaceae. What appear to be 'flowers' in this photo are actually cyathia, an inflorescence type consisting of an involucre, rimmed here with four petal-like 'glands', and supporting separate male and female flowers. I've labeled the floral parts with various letters in another detail photo of this plant which I submitted here at CalPhotos. [Go to URL: http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/cgi/img_query?where-kwid=0000+0000+0104+0550&one=T ] I hope this will clarify characters and descriptions encountered when keying Chamaesyce and other Euphorbaceae.
