Cladoniaceae
notes Syn.: Cenomyce pityrea (Flörke) Ach., Cladonia anomaea (Ach.) Ahti & P. James, Cladonia lamarkii Delise ex Nyl., Cladonia pityrea (Flörke) Fr. - Habitat: Mixed wood, mainly Fagus sylvatica, Pice abise, Ostrya carpinifolia, Fraxinus ornus; moderately inclined mountain slope, south aspect; calcareous, colluvial, skeletal ground; mostly in shade, dry place; partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevations 555 m (1.820 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: Probably an old Fagus sylvatica stump in the last stage of disintegration, almost already soil. - Comments (pertain to Flickr album Cladonia ramulosa): Cladonia ramulosa is a wide spread, but a rather rare species. It is very variable and therefore often not easy to be properly addressed. Podetia are usually present and small, up to 3 cm high max. They may be of very different shape: pointed, with very small cups of approximately the same diameter as podetia, but also with wide cups, which are in most cases deformed and have proliferations with irregular, convex apothecia on top. Pale brown color (becomes semi-translucent when wet) of apothecia is characteristic. The species generally grows on acid to neutral substrata, often on heavily rotten tree stumps as in the case shown. - Since I did no microscopy and chemistry work and the species is very variable, I'm not completely sure the determination is correct. - Ref.: (1) C.W.Smith, et all, The lichens of Great Britain and Ireland,The British Lichen Society, (2009), p 334.
