  • notes   Slo.: jezičasti ralovec, Cr.: jezičasta kukavica - syn.: Orchis lingua (L.) Scop., Helleborine lingua (L.) Pers., Serapiastrum lingua (L.) A. A. Eaton - Habitat: unmaintained, semiruderal, open, sunny, dry place; flat terrain; calcareous ground; average precipitations ~ 900 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, elevations 50 m (165 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Serapias lingua): Serapias lingua is one of the most common species in this interesting genus. Albeit not tall and showy, it is probably also among the most beautiful of those nine species and subspecies growing along east shores of Mediterranean Sea in Croatia. The flowers are often vividly pink, purple veined or tinted violet while stems are yellow green to reddish. Yet, the colors are variable and the plant can be also quite pale colored particularly when growing in shade. Serapias lingua is a plant of Mediterranean garrigue, phrygana, dry and stony grassland, pastures, edges of paths, abandoned olive groves and edges of agricultural surfaces. It reproduces also vegetatively with stolons. This is probably the reason that in favorable years (like in 2023) it can appear massively in dense formations. Sometimes one can admire hundreds and hundreds of flowering plants. - Ref.: (1) P.
