notes Slo.: hrapavi oponec - syn.: Smilax mauritanica Poir., Smilax nigra Willd., Smilax pendulina Lowe - Habitat: overgrown abandoned fields, garrigue; almost flat terrain; calcareous, skeletal ground; mostly sunny, warm and dry place; elevation 13 m (43 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Smilax aspera): Smilax aspera is a Mediterranean, creeping, thorny shrub, which can grow up to 15 m high. It can be found in almost all countries around Mediterranean Sea. The plant is tough and has prickles on most of its parts. Characteristic are small prickles on the leave stalk and/or on the margins of its leaves. This is an easy recognizable morphological trait, which distinguishes Smilax aspera from a few other similar plants growing in the same habitats. The leaves are deep green, leathery, hard and shiny and of very characteristic shape. Yet, the plant is very variable, particularly the shape of leaves. Sometimes even the characteristic prickles on leaf margins are missing. - Smilax aspera is dioecious, that means that the male and female reproductive organs are distinct and present in two separate plants. The flowers are small, pale whitish-yellowish-green and not very attractive. However, berries are very decorative. When ripe they are of deep red color and shiny but not always. Rarely they can be red-brown or even black. - The plant is common and can be found almost everywhere along mainland and islands of East Adriatic Sea shore. - Ref.: (1) M. Blamey, C.
