location
Adriatic Sea, island Cres, south of village Miholašćica; above main road from town Cres, just before the settlement; Kvarner archipelago (Rijeka region, Croatia)notes Slo.: Bertolonijevo mačje uho - syn.: Arachnites insengae Tod., Ophrys dalmatica (Murr) Soó, Ophrys inzengae (Tod.) Nyman, Ophrys marzensis Soca, Ophrys penedensis Kalkhoff, Ophrys romolinii Soca - Habitat: Unmaintained grassland in an olive grove; partly semiruderal terrain; flat, mostly sunny, dry, skeletal, calcareous ground; elevation 30 m (100 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment (pertains to Flickr album Ophrys bertolonii): Ophrys bertolonii is a very rare species in Slovenia. It was found first time in 2006 (Ref.: 3) and is not yet included in our check lists. Contrary, in broader Istria region, on islands of Kvarner archipelago and all along east shore of Adriatic Sea down to Montenegro it is more common. This species is relatively easy to recognize, providing you found a typical form and don't intend to enter host of lower level taxa described in the literature. Characteristic traits of the species are its relatively large labellum (up to 2 cm long), which is curved up into a saddle-shape and rather simple speculum situated close to the tip of labellum. It is usually bluish in color, sometimes also reddish, and rarely divided into two patches. - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). - Ref.: (1) P.
