INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 20, 2009
  • location   East of Bodie, near border with Nevada (Mono County, California, US)
  • family Apocynaceae
  • notes   Habitus shot of one of many Asclepias cryptoceras plants in the area. They had numerous, plentifully-flowered inflorescences which seemed to have been subject to 'early dessication' (due to dryness/heat-stress?) before many of the flowers had fully-opened from bud. I found only a few open flowers among the many plants here.

The plants were growing in a strange, 'foamy', 'crusty', and cracked clay-like soil found on the high desert hillside here in the Bodie Hills. The soil had a crunchy crust 5-10 mm thick, and if stepped on one's foot would break the crust and sink a good ways below the crust (around 3 cm or more).
