  • location   Adriatic Sea, island Cres, village Martinšćica, sea shore west of the village, Kvarner archipelago (Rijeka region, Croatia)
  • notes   Slo.: srebrnasta nohtnica - syn.: Illecebrum kapela Hacq. - Habitat: steep sea shore, south aspect; sea cliffs, in the reach of salt water breez; open, dry, rocky place; calcareous ground; elevation 3-4 m (10-13 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil in rock crevices. - Comment (pertains to Flickr album Paronychia kapela): Paronychia kapela is mostly considered as a Mediterranean plant. But it can be found also in south Alps and frequently high in the Dinaric mountains of west Balkan peninsula. It grows from sea level to almost alpine elevations. One can buy it as a cultivar for alpine gardens. However, it is quite common plant on sea shore cliffs of several Adriatic islands as well as of mainland shore. Several subspecies are known. These pictures show stands from three mayor Adriatic islands Rab, Krk and Cres. - Appearance of Paronychia kapela is quite unusual. Its tiny and yellow-greenish flowers are usually hard to detect. They are hidden behind abundant silvery-white, papery bracts, which are longer and larger than flower petals. From far the plants sometimes look like silvery, half translucent blobs. Even green stalk leaves are often covered by dense bracts and hence inconspicuous. Where Paronychia kapela grows in crevices among white limestone rocks even these blobs are easy to be overseen. From far, really not a showy plant! However, if one looks at it closely, the story becomes completely different. Everything on this plant is beautiful! - Ref.: (1) Personal communication (det.) with Ljiljana Borovečki-Voska, Zagreb. (2) A.
