notes Habit of the diminutive Hesperevax acaulis. Note the terminal inflorescence heads occur singly here, which is a key characteristic of species acaulis. The 5 star-like tomentose lobes of the apparent heads here are not phyllaries, but are actually chaff-scales encircling the 4-6 brownish-looking staminate disk flowers at the centers of the ''stars''. The pistillate ray flowers are also surrounded by chaff scales, but are hidden from view here by the staminate chaff scales. Although the leaves appear sessile to me...which would seem to lead to H. a. var. acaulis via the primary character in couplet 2 of the FNA key...couplet 5 of the newer JM2 key uses the length, width, and (indirectly, I believe) aspect-ratio of the largest leaves as the primary character (i.e. more than 6 times as long as wide for H. a. var. acaulis vs. less than 4 times as long as wide for H. a. var. ambusticola). This emphasis is consistent with Jim Morefield's comments on various CalPhotos posts (e.g. see here). So I'm assuming this is variety ambusticola, since the largest leaves here are less than 3 times as long as wide. Found growing on sloping, gravelly, shale-derived substrate in openings surrounded by chamise-dominated chaparral. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
