notes Detail of a fruiting head and pappus of M. douglasii ssp. douglasii. Note the fairly long pappus scales, roughly equal in length to the aristae and cypselas. Note also that the lateral margins of the scales are in-rolled, and the apices of the scales are erose (= somewhat 'gnawed-looking')...but not bifid (as they are in Uropappus and (at least some) Stebbinsoseris. The companion post here is the same photo...but with centimeter/millimeter scale bars inserted along the left & bottom edges of the image. The dimensions of the (focal plane in the) field of view are 33 cm X 27 cm. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
