notes This photo is meant to convey the visual impression of a patch of grassland (here a serpentine grassland) liberally-peppered with the flowering heads of Microseris douglasii (here likely M. douglasii ssp. tenella). It's interesting that at this locale the phenology of the bulk of the population was still in 'flowering stage', with few fruits present...whereas less than two miles away and a month earlier much of the Microseris douglasii population in this photo was well into the 'fruiting stage' and I saw no Microseris flowers at all during visits on multiple days. The takeaway is that the start and duration of the flowering stage and/or fruiting stage for a population depends on many factors and can vary not just with the year, but with the location on a fairly fine scale. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
