Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve (San Mateo County, California, US)notes In Microseris douglasii ssp. tenella the scale body (= widened, off-white, membranous basal portion of each pappus part) is very short relative to the lengths of both the cypsela (below the scale) and the arista (beyond it). Looking at the full-size image, one can see that the scales are laterally-inrolled and, if flattened, would be similar in shape to a 'spade' (as in the 'ace-of-spades'). Note the wide beige mid-ribs of the pappus scales. Compare the relative lengths of the pappus scales, cypselas, and aristae of Microseris d. ssp. tenella in this image to those of M. d. ssp. douglasii here. It would be interesting to study how often these two subspecies co-occur in populations...and when they do, what relative proportions of each are present, and whether there are individuals with intermediate scale lengths? photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
