  • location   About 2 km southeast of village Gabrovica pri Komnu, Komen Karst planes (Primorska, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: kranjski grahovec - syn.: Astragalus carniolicus A.Kern., Astragalus pastellianus sensu auct., Astragalus tymphaeus Quezel & Contandr. - Family: Fabaceae Lindl. - Habitat: Karst plane grassland, partly overgrown with bushes and scattered trees; flat terrain; calcareous, skeletal ground; sunny, dry and warm place; elevation 265 m (870 feet); average precipitations 1.500-1.600 mm/year, average temperature 11-12 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil.- Comment: These pictures belongs to a group of plants Astragalus vesicarius s. lat., which grows mostly on small, isolated and often disjunct places from Spain, along south and inner belt of the Alps to Pannonian region and Balkan peninsula. They are quite rare. Many distinctly different looking taxa have been described in the literature on species level and lower taxonomic ranks. However, due to their large variation some experts find questionable to recognize too many species, which are supposed to differ in shape, size and color of flower parts. However, recent genetic investigations showed (Ref.: 4) that some populations growing at the southern border of the Alps are distinctly genetically separated. Astragalus vesicarius ssp. carniolicus is one of them. Even those named so, which grow in Slovenia on Mt. Nanos plateau and on Karst plane near village Komen and Nova Gorica do look to some extent differently. - Ref.: (1) Personal communications with Prof. dr.
