Bornm - Habitat: 'Backyard' of a small sea shore bay almost at sea level; flat terrain, calcareous, ground, sea gravel; open space, sunny and dry place; elevation 2 m (7 feet); average precipitations ~ 900-1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil among gravel. - Comment: Mullein (Verbascum) is a very interesting genus for me. Almost 20 species of this genus grow in Slovenia, however, it is widespread predominantly in the Mediterranean region of the Europe. The plants are mostly tall, some of them up to 2 m, usually with many, many yellow, white or violet flowers, when in bloom. - Verbascum sinuatum is also a Mediterranean floral element. One can find it only in the warmest parts of my country in its southwest region. Especially characteristic are its first year leaves growing in rosettes (it is a biennial plant), which are whitish- or yellowish-green, soft, wooly hairy and have wavy leaf edges. The plants have widely branching inflorescence in the second year. - Ref.: (1) A.
