  • location   Lower Trenta valley between villages Soča and Trenta; Skokar's ravine, below mountain ridge from Mt. Bavški grintavec to Mt. Srebnjak; right bank of river Soča, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • family Fabaceae
  • notes   Slo.: Jacquinov ranjak - syn.: Anthyllis jacquinii A. Kern. - Habitat: At the bottom of a steep Alpine ravine, light wood with openings, dominant trees: Ostrya carpinifolia, Fraxinus ornus, Laburnum alpinum, Fagus sylvatica; sandy and rocky, colluvial, calcareous ground; open, sunny, relatively warm and dry place; eastsoutheast aspect; elevation from 740 to 835 m, (2.450 - 2.800 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 5-7 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: sandy soil. - Comment: Nineteen species of genus vetch (Anthyllis) grow in Europe, most of them in warm Mediterranean region. Only two of them are known in Slovenia (Ref.: 4) and neighboring countries Austria (Ref.: 2) and Italy (Ref.: 6) and elsewhere in the Alps (Ref.: 1): common, kidney vetch or woundwort (Anthyllis vulneraria s.lat) and Anthyllis jacquinii = Anthyllis montana ssp. jacquinii (taxonomical rank of the taxon is not yet agreed upon). The former is very well known, widespread and common, also a distinguished medical plant of late spring and summer meadows. The latter is much rarer. Not many records of it are registered in the plant databases of my country. Most of them relate to Sub-Mediterranean and Dinaric phytogeographical regions of the country (Ref.: 3). For Slovenian alpine region the species is mentioned only once by the Slovenian botanist Alfonz Paulin (Ref.: 5), who in 1902 cited an older source from 1884 written by the German botanist Wilhelm Voss. He allegedly found the plant in Vrata valley on north side of the Julian Alps. Unfortunately, neither detailed description of the plant, nor exact location or herbarium specimen exist. After his find, during last 140 years, nobody has seen this plant again in the Julian Alps and consequently, some botanists doubt in this find. Flora Europaea (Ref.: 1), for example, does not list Jacquini's vetch for Slovenian Alps. - Yet, in May (2020) I accidentally found the plant in the Lower Trenta valley in a steep ravine descending from Mt. Bavški grintavec (Ref.:7). Together with dr. Igor Dakskobler we found it later on three places about 250 to 300 m above the bottom of the valley. There were altogether more than 20 individual plants in full bloom. Most of them seemed vital and some of them quite large, forming cushions up to about 80 x 50 cm across. By this we outdo the quandary of the presence of this beautiful species (as are most of them in this genus) in the Slovenian Alps. - Ref.: (1) Aeschimann, D., K. Lauber, D. M. Moser, & J. P.
