Pteridaceae
notes Underside of a pinna (i.e. unit at 'first degree' of pinnate division) of an Aspidotis californica blade. The pinnules (i.e. units at 'second degree' of pinnate division) are themselves dissected into 5-7 segments cut nearly to the midrib of the pinnule...and those segments are apically 3-5 toothed and support 1-3 discrete clumps of whitish sori (= agglomerations of sporangia, here irregularly kidney-shaped) and 1-7 smaller brownish, roughly-oblong indusia. At this early point in the season, the (fairly tiny) indusia are light-brown/tan/beige...but I think they often become black when seen later in the year. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
