  • notes   Slo.: navadna splavka - syn: Epipactis abortiva (L.) All, Ionorchis abortiva (L.) Beck, Jonorchis abortiva (L.) Beck, Neottia abortiva (L.) Clairv., Orchis abortiva L. Serapias abortiva (L.) Scop. - Habitat: Grassland, unmaintained; among old olive trees; locally flat terrain; mostly sunny, dry place; calcareous, skeletal ground; elevation 60 m (200 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 13-14 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Limodorum abortivum is an unusual and interesting plant. It is a mycoheterotrophic species. To survive it is obviously bound to fungi in spite to the fact that it has some chlorophyll in its stem and insignificant leaves. The species needs little description as it is highly distinctive and almost impossible to confuse with any other orchid, yet, it is quite 'difficult' in respect to taxonomy. Just see its synonymy next to its current name. Botanists have assigned and reassigned it to several different genera. The flowers can be of widely different color. Several varieties have been described, all of them probably without much significance to phylogeny. - The plant is a Mediterranean floral element. In central and north Europe, it is quite rare and commonly protected species. - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). - Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). - Ref.: (1) M.A. Fischer, W.
