INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Nov 21, 2019
  • location   Wilkes Island (Wilkes (Wake Atoll), United States Minor Outlying Islands)
  • family Sulidae
  • habitat  Tropical oceans
  • notes   While seen on the other islands of Wake Atoll, nesting is primarily ground nesting on Wilkes Island. While Wake Island had been named Isla San Francisco by the Spanish in 1568, Captain William Wake's trip in 1796 left his name on the atoll through the present. Later, in 1841, the American Exploring Expedition led by Charles Wilkes named the 2 smaller islands of the atoll Wilkes and Peale. While Charles Wilkes was the leader of the expedition, Titian Peale was the expedition's naturalist. Today, Peale and Wilkes are unihabitated, and all of the development and use is on Wake island.
