INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 1, 2012
  • location   Off Excelsior Mine Road, a few miles north of I-15 (San Bernardino County, California, US)
  • family Cactaceae
  • notes   Stems from the sprawling colony of Grusonia parishii in the 1st image of the series. Viewing the full-size image, the flat character of the larger spines is quite apparent. I believe the red, curled, 'horn-like' growths are vestigial and ephemeral leaves. Two of the joints here appear to have been damaged (pecked or chewed?) by an animal.
