  • notes   Slo.: nemška košeničnica - syn.: Cytisus germanica (L.) Vis., Genista spinosa Gilib. - Habitat: Stony road scarp; steep mountain slope, southeast aspect; rocky, skeletal, calcareous ground; full sun; elevation 1.130 m (3.700 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 4-6 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Plants of the family Fabaceae, as well as of the genus Genista, are usually not too difficult to be determined to species level. Genista germanica is for example quite easy to be recognized. As the only species of this genus, from nine of them growing in Slovenia, it has a potentially 'nasty characteristic-, which is, looking superficially, not on show but rather well hidden. These are sharp, strong thorns. Namely, the showy young and beautiful flowering branches, which are usually quite densely packed, are without them and only deeper in the plant's 'bushes', where the sight doesn't-t reach, the older braches bare them. So, be careful when you intend to pick off a branch or two. The plant is also poisonous. - Genista germanica is a European species, quite a common plant, particularly in Germany and France. In Slovenia it grows widely distributed, but rather scattered, almost on the whole territory of the country. - Ref.: (1) D. Aeschimann, K. Lauber, D.M. Moser, J.P.
