location
Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta, right bank of river Soča; Trenta 2b cottage, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)order
Embiidina
notes Slo.: rožnati dolgin, rožnati matija - Habitat: inside a building situated on calcareous ground on the edge of a larger mountain pasture; relatively warm and dry place; on the vertical wall of a kitchen; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 600 m (1.970 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. Comment: Leiobunum roseum is just one of several thousands (6.000+) of the members of harvestmens (order Opiliones). Its phylogeny is still in a state of flux. It looks like a large but tender spider, but it is not spider. Taxonomically it is closer to crabs than to spiders. Opiliones are poorly researched and often it is difficult to be determine them to species level. About one third of them have been observed and scientifically described only once up to now. Leiobunum roseum is an exception in this respect. Its unique distribution, distinct pinkish-red back (males; females are only slightly colored reddish or not at all) and extremely long legs make it easy for determination. The species is endemic and known only from southeast Alps. Their distribution region includes a small portion of northeast Italy, a narrow band of south most Austria and the whole Julian alps in Slovenia. It is typically a montane elevation species. However, it can be found also lower, but if so exclusively in the pre-alpine phytogeographical region of Slovenia. In Austria the species is considered highly endangered, while it is not protected in Slovenia. One doesn't need to be afraid of harvestmen because they have no venom at all. In spite of this many people believe that it has the most poisonous of all venoms in the animal kingdom, but fortunately too small mouth to penetrate human skin. But, this is just one of those urban myths going around. In my house in Trenta valley they live for decades. They appear from time to time mostly on walls. They are neither fast moving insects (as most other Opiliones) nor timid and behave almost like pets. In addition, by eating small dead insects and other organic waste they help cleaning the house and (as 'non-spiders') make no spiders web. Length of the body of the photographed specimen was about 5 mm and distance between the tips of the second pair of the legs about 17 cm. NOTE: This species doesn't belong to the order Embiidina. The name was used 'provisionally' to enable publishing of the find. True order Opiliones apparently doesn't exists on CalPhotos. - Ref.: (1) Personal communication and identification Prof. Dr. Tone Novak, University of Maribor, Department of Biology (2) N. Šajna, P.
