  • location   Mt. Kanin mountain group, Krnica valley; next to the unmarked trail below Vratni vrh, 1996 m, ridge from Planina Krnica to Kotel place; East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: laponska prstasta kukavica (podvrsta 'retiška') ali retiška prstasta kukavica - syn: Dactylorhiza majalis ssp. Lapponica (Laest) Sund. - Habitat: Grassy mountain slope, gravel and rocks, southwest aspect, calcareous ground; open place, full sun, warm and quite dry place; elevation 1.740 m (5.700 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 1-2 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil among rocks. - Comment: Dactylorhiza lapponica is quite a rare find in my country. According to (some) botanists two subspecies exist - Dactylorhiza lapponica ssp. lapponica which is growing in north Europe, mainly in Scandinavia and Dactylorhiza lapponica ssp. rhaetica, which grows in south Austria near Slovenian border, northeast Italy and Slovenia (Ref: 5). However, taxonomy of these and similar plants is not yet agreed upon. Many synonymize Dactylorhiza lapponica to Dactylorhiza traunsteineri ssp. lapponica or Dactylorhiza majalis ssp. lapponica (for example Ref: 7) or even to Dactylorhiza traunsteineri (Ref:8 – giving a good overview on history of taxonomical changes). Recent molecular studies however, found no significant differences among some of these species or subspecies. Nevertheless, Dactylorhiza traunsteineri and Dactylorhiza lapponica are still accepted in most of European floras. So we use the name Dactylorhiza lapponica. - The plant photographed in this observation grows on quite unusual place. According to literature marshes or wet places near springs are its normal habitat. This plant was found on quite steep mountain slope consisting of grass overgrown, stony, old scree slope with numerous large rocks intermixed. The ground seemed to be very water permeable and due to southwest aspect the site is relatively warm. Hence it seems to be quite dry in spite of the fact of locally very high amount of precipitations per year. The plant was growing solitary. - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - (1) Id'ed by Mr. Branko Dolinar. (2) A.
