INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 26, 2016
  • location   San Mateo County, CA (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • family Montiaceae (formerly Portulacaceae)
  • plant community   decomposed serpentine
  • notes   Photo depicts plants that were grown from seed from the original site and then re-introduced back into the same general area. Seeds were grown in cultivation under lights for one year in semi-sterile conditions. The plant material was verified pest and disease free before considering reintroduction. Seedlings were reintroduced back into the wild about a week before the first rain in late fall. Only one population exists at the original site, so these plants were placed into a different rock outcrop with the hopes of expanding the overall population It took 4 years from sowing for the introduced plants to flower. There was a little less than a 50% survival rate, and the plants took a very long time to reach maturity. Much larger, more mature plants were also introduced into the same general area and 3 years after planting, there was approximately a 65% survival rate. These bigger plants flowered every year since being planted, but the site was prone to gopher devastation since it wasn't rocky enough. Preliminary experimental results suggest planting larger, more mature starter material in rocky, serpentine rich areas where gophers can't dig will have the highest success rates.
