this photo depicts a plant that was cultivated or collected in the wild
photo location Front yard (in captivity)
plant's place of origin
Front yard during the winter/spring grow season, in my cool, dry garage during the summer (San Mateo County, California, US)family
Purslane family (Montiaceae, formerly Portulacaceae )
plant community serpentine soils, although this specimen is in 80% sand, 20% potting soil.notes Lewisia rediviva forms multiple crowns and an incredible amount of flowers in cultivation. This pot at one point was filled with so many flowers you couldn't see any leaves or soil! They're not particularly tricky to grow, but they do have specific requirements: 1) summer dormancy (keep soil mostly dry) 2) well draining soil, mostly inorganic. Keep moist but allow soil to dry out between watering. 3) protection from deep freezes, but can withstand light frosts even in pots. 4) application of 1/4 strength fertilizer low in Nitrogen and high in P,K during the grow season increases # bloom of plants 5) not advised to let the soil temp go above 80F, even during the summer dormancy period. It'll fry them. 6) easy to propagate from fresh seeds. They require no light to germinate (best results covering seeds in a thin layer of pumice, lava rock, pebbles, coarse sand, etc). Stratify for 42 days, and they'll sprout within 2 weeks or so under lights. You can push them to grow faster and quicker under lights in an unheated garage during the winter/spring.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
