INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 18, 2016
  • location   Nicasio Ridge (Marin County, California, US)
  • family Brassicaceae
  • notes   Flowers and a mature fruit of a late stage individual of Streptanthus glandulosus ssp. pulchellus, growing on serpentine substrate within the leafless dead stems of a low-growing Ceanothus decornutus nurse plant, on the west-facing slope of the ridge just south-east of Black Mountain, and south of the west end of Nicasio Reservoir. The fruits were more-or-less secund (and clearly flat parallel to the suture, a charaacter separating Streptanthus from Caulanthus...though one that often only works well if you have mature fruit!).

Note that some botanists consider the Nicasio Streptanthus to be distinct from other populations of S. g. ssp. pulchellus (e.g. in having calyces brighter pink (rather than purplish), with few or no bristles, and more pronounced ''flanges'') and believe it may be deserving of a different taxonomic name at some subspecific rank.
