notes Profile of Leptosiphon croceus...a small, but relatively showy, annual plant. In my experience of years past, early June was the time of peak of flowering for this very endangered species (there is one known population, about 30' x 60' in size). This year and the preceding few there have been alarmingly few plants in flower in early June. I counted only 50 plants on my visit this day...in pre-drought years I'd estimate there were at least 1000 (perhaps 3000?) or more flowering plants around this date. The view in this photo from June 5, 2006 shows about one twelfth of the population at that time. While much of California has suffered a severe drought in the last 4+ years, this particular localized coastal location has had 80% or more of average precip during those years....so the drought alone does not seem to provide a sufficient explanation for the severe drop in numbers in recent years. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
