Fabaceae
notes This interesting plant typically grows low against hard packed ground and is often well-camoflagued and easy to overlook. Note the curious persistent pedicels...with lateral pairs of dark-red, gland-like, spine-tipped ''horns''...that remain attached to the inflorescence axis after the aging calyces and fruits drop. Note also some of the diagnostic key characters visible here: needle-like calyx lobes longer than calyx tube; corollas slightly shorter than calyces; and some leaves have slightly ''wavy'' edges (i.e. are mildly ''scalloped'')...but note also that other leaves of the same plant aren't ''wavy-edged''. This leaf margin character, although appearing in the key, is apparently not a consistent diagnostic character for the species. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
