  • location   Mt. Mangart region, Mangart's plateau, slightly east of the beginning of terminal loop of Mt. Mangart's alpine road, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: belkaste ročice - syn.: Leucorchis albida (L.) Mey., Gymnadenia albida (L.) Rich. - Introduction: Pseudorchis albida is an interesting small orchid growing in Slovenian mountains. It is neither a common nor an easy to spot plant with its small, only 3-5 mm long whitish-yellowish-greenish flowers. But it is a wide spread Arctic-Alpine floristic element and can be found in all Alpine regions and other European mountains from montane to alpine elevations. Two subspecies of Pseudorchis albida have been described: Pseudorchis albida ssp. albida and Pseudorchis albida ssp. tricuspis. However, these two taxa are not generally recognized. So far I photographed Pseudorchis albida on six different places and studied some traits, which separate both taxa. The plant(s) on two of them corresponded well to Pseudorchis albida ssp. albida, on other two to Pseudorchis albida ssp. tricuspis and on two of them the distinguishing features were intermixed. There was no problem in determination with observations #1 and #2 below. They both can be ascribed to Pseudorchis albida ssp. albida. Plants have relatively large inflorescence with more than 30 flowers and bracts are approximately as long as ovary. The middle lobe of the lip (labellum) is longer and wider than both side ones as expected. But, observation #3 can hardly be described as Pseudorchis albida ssp. albida. Even though it is a large, tall plant with 45+ flowers in its inflorescence (distinguishing features for Pseudorchis albida ssp. albida), its lip (labellum) has all three lobes of equal length and bracts are longer than ovary. Both last two features are typical for Pseudorchis albida ssp. tricuspis. Apparently the plant stands in between both taxa. For more detailed information see also observation Pseudorchis albida ssp. tricuspis. 1. observation Date: July 22. 2008 Lat.: 46.44534 Long.: 13.64148 Code: Bot_286/2008_DSC1762 Habitat:alpine grassland, open place, full sun, exposed to direct rain, altitude 1.980 m (6.500 feet), average precipitations about 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 0-1 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil. Comments: Two plants growing together with 40 and 48 flowers in their inflorescence.
