  • location   Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta, right bank of river Soča, 'Na melu' place near Trenta 2b cottage, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: širokolistna močvirnica - syn.: Epipactis latifolia (L.) All, Helleborine latifolia (L.) Moench - Habitat: grassland, pasture, a few meters away of mixed forest edge, slightly southeast inclined terrain; colluvial, calcareous, skeletal ground, shallow soil layer; open, dry place, partly sunny, exposed to direct rain, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7 -9 deg C, elevation 625 m (2.050 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Members of genus Epipactis are difficult for determination. Only some members have distinct and easy to recognize traits and are relatively morphologically stable, but others are very variable. In addition, hybrids are common. It is not surprising that several taxonomical approaches to this genus exist and it is hence difficult to find two references with the same system, plant names and relevant traits descriptions. The results of recent DNA analyses clarified the complex situation only partially. Epipactis helleborine, which is a widely distributed and common species, is especially variable and many subspecies (many times treated on species level), variations and forms have been described. But, it again and again happens that the plants found 'do not want to correspond to the books'. Three plants have been photographed (two in flowering state and when in seeds) in the vicinity of my home, which correspond well to subspecies helleborine. These on pictures no. 30 - 33 are typical, with 'everything as it should be'; almost the same can be said about the plants on pictures no. 10 - 14, while the plants on pictures no 20 - 24 raise some doubts (Ref.1.). They have narrower, less rounded leaves, which is according to (Ref.:3).typical to the plants growing on warm places. - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). - Ref.: (1) Personal communication with Mr. Branko Dolinar (Leg.: A.
