location
Mt. Mangart’s flats, east of Mt. Mali vrh, about halfway from the mountain pass between Mt. Mali vrh and Mt. Mangart to the top of Mt. Mali vrh, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: alpski gornik - syn.: Arbutus alpina (L.) Niedenzu - Habitat: Stony alpine grassland, modestly steep, east oriented mountain slope, calcareous ground but somewhat acid at surface; sunny, open, wind and rain exposed place, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 1-3 deg C, elevation 1.940 m (6.450 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Arctostaphylos alpina, an Arctic-Alpine element growing far north in the Arctic of Eurasia and America as well as in the Alps, is not a rare high mountain plant in Slovenia. Yet, at the beginning it is quite difficult to find and recognize it. The reason is probably that its nicely shaped but small watery-white flowers (sometimes with green or pink tint), only about 4 - 5 mm in diameter, develop early, when the leaves just start to develop. So, the flowers are masked by numerous dead, whitish - gray leaves of previous year. When the leaves fully develop they are from far similar to other species like Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Vaccinium vitis-idaea (Cowberry) and Vaccinium gaultherioides all of them growing in similar habitats and having similar habitus. Determination is much easier in autumn when the leaves of Arctostaphylos alpina become beautifully carmine red. When one finds shiny black round berries beneath them the determination is safe and sound. - Ref.: (1) D. Aeschimann, K. Lauber, D.M. Moser, J.P.
