INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 26, 2010
  • location   Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve (San Mateo County, California, US)
  • notes   Oblique view of flower and fruit. Note the linear-lanceolate shape of the fruit capsule...which is one of the diagnostic characters for C. argillosus

Currently it's fairly common to find this species flowering in June in the serpentine grasslands of Edgewood County Park, as well as the serpentine grasslands to the south of Edgewood for at least a few miles. I've also seen it flowering recently in a (non-serpentine) grassland opening along the upper part of the Hamm's Gulch Trail at Windy Hill Open Space.

However, nearly every plant I've seen has had numerous decapitated stems at a height that clearly indicates deer browsing. A patch of about 14 plants seen in full flower on one day had ''disappeared'' two days later...all the flowers and fruit chomped off. Deer are currently far above their local natural population levels, and their preferential browsing of Calochortus fruits and flowers must cause significant depletion of the seed bank. While this species can also propagate via bulblets, that mode of reproduction lacks the benefits of robust genetic variation provided by seed from cross-pollinated flowers.
