notes This image shows habitat for Clarkia breweri...growing here on serpentine soil and scree within openings in chaparral & oak/gray-pine woodland, on a north-facing slope. This was among the largest and most dense group of flowering C. breweri I have ever seen....it continued for tens of meters in each direction surrounding the area seen in the photo here. Two other views of the stand appear as (clickable) thumbnails at the upper right of this browser window. According to this reference (see pg. 220), Clarkia breweri is unique in the genus in having scented flowers that are moth pollinated. (I wish I had sampled the fragrance!). A number of moths were seen visiting the Clarkia breweri flowers at this location. Images of one can be seen at this BugGuide post. Adaptation to moth pollination helps to explain the floral morphology here of elongate stamens with pilose anthers and even more elongate styles...see images here and here. high resolution file https://www.flickr.com/photos/17069890@N03/17302225355/sizes/o
