notes I had a little difficulty keying this one at first...though, as is often the case, I don't see so clearly why in hindsight! :-) Part of it was that I had thought Trifolium grayi was always along the coast. Trifolium devotee and master Randy Morgan helped me here. This is what he had to say: ''Yes indeed it is T. grayi, the endemic (?) Scotts Valley version thereof. And yes, T. g. IS (mostly) coastal but only in the broad sense. There are upwards of 10-15 regional races of it, only a few of which are immediate-coastal, and there is even one race in the Sierran foothills! BTW T. barbigerum does occur in that area but the corollas only barely equal the calyx and the white banner part is tiny.'' This particular plant had a strangely asymmetric flower development in the head. keywords: trifolium grayi
