What was unusual and remarkable here were the inflorescences with bright-red corollas...which were somewhat swollen-thickened and ''warty'' with abnormally enlarged and exserted stigmas. Normally A. imbricata has whitish flowers and the stigmas remain included within the corolla until it drops.

I dissected a few corollas and found the anthers appeared to be 'frozen' in a pre-dehiscent state. There were no insect larvae within, which seemed to rule out an insect-induced gall. So I'm guessing this was the result of infection by a virus or other microbial pathogen. Note that, in addition to the corollas, the terminal leaves also seemed to be deformed and afflicted.
