notes This is an exquisite native fritillary that's always a delight to see...though it's easy to walk right past them in full flower, as they often cryptically melt into their background. Whenever you see these in flower, you're also likely to see a number of their solitary, oblong, glossy, deep-green, 'nurse leaves' lying flat on the ground nearby. The nurse-leaves simply photosynthesize throughout the year, sequestering the carbohydrates they manufacture within their underground bulbs. When energy stores in the bulb are sufficient, and a spring with favorable conditions arrives, the bulb will produce an erect flowering stalk with linear leaves that appear quite different from the widely-oblong 'nurse' leaf. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
