This post was inspired by Tom Chester's nice web page on Eriodictyon of southern California, which features a habitat photo at the top of the page showing the population containing this plant.
This goes unambiguously to Eriodictyon crassifolium var. crassifolium in the Jepson e-flora key for genus Eriodictyon.
There are a number of distinctive characters to note here:
1) The densely short-tomentose ''felt'' on both the upper and the lower leaf surfaces...which, on the lower surface, at least partially obscures the reticulate fine patterning often seen in other species of Eriodictyon like E. californicum and E. trichocalyx.
2) The ''non-glutinous'' (= non-sticky/waxy) quality of the upper leaf surfaces here...in constrast to the glutinous character of typical E. trichocalyx.
3) The relatively wide ''ovate-ness'' of the ovate-lanceolate leaves here...in constrast to the more narrowly oblong-lanceolate leaf shape of typical E. trichocalyx.
