notes This image shows two species of Chorizanthe which grow together in sandy areas of Fort Ord. A third species, C. pungens, also co-occurs with these two, but didn't make it into the photo here :-). The more open-growing plant with conspicuously bright-white involucres and flowers is C. diffusa. The other plant, with shorter stems and more congested yellow-green involucres (and tawny past ones) is a very recently described species of Chorizanthe first noticed and puzzled over by Randy Morgan some years ago, but only recently fully resolved and published as C. minutiflora...named for its minute flowers, which are the smallest in the (already small-flowered) genus. I didn't capture this plant in its full-flowered glory, as I visited the locale a bit too late, and in a hot, dry year. But nicer images can be seen in the plates accompanying the Phytoneuron article describing the species C. minutiflora. Thanks go to David Styer for showing me this special treat. (I hope to return and get better photos at a more opportune time.) photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
