  • plant community   Alpine cinder deserts on Haleakala above 2100m
  • notes   Genus endemic to Hawaiian Islands; this subspecies endemic to Haleakala on East Maui. This species differs in having very thick floccose-silk 'hair' which completely hides the surface. Probably the most famous member of the Silversword alliance (over 50 species, subsp., variations endemic to Hawaii and classic example of Adaptive Radiation). This subspecies is listed as Threatened.
