  • notes   View of ventral surface. This creature could easily be mistaken for a clump of seaweed. The Masking Crab camouflages itself by decorating its shell with bits of alga, sponges, bryozoans and ascidians. It is nearly impossible to spot in the intertidal environment if it remains still. The crab is more readily detected when it moves.
