plant community Dense shade on wet, bryophyte-covered ground or on lower parts of tree trunks, rarely epiphytic on tree ferns; wet forest 275-17notes Endemic to Hawaiian Islands. Elevation around 3880ft/1183m. This species is becoming more rare (especially on the Big Island) and is currently a 'species of concern'. They do not self pollinate and require an unknown insect pollinator. This plant was likely planted as part of the Park Service management/restoration strategy.camera Olympus Stylus 850SW
