notes Growing in serpentine. This plant seems to clearly be Phacelia imbricata ssp. imbricata, though some of my other posts from Del Puerto Canyon were growing in serpentine, and were more glandular and rather caespitose in habit, making it somewhat difficult to decide between P. imbricata and P. corymbosa. The range of the latter is given as Coast Ranges north from Sonoma County, and this locale is southeast of the San Francisco Bay...but one might wonder, could we have a range extension of P. corymbosa? I encountered some ambiguity in trying run those plants through the key for Phacelia in the current Jepson Manual. Choices are clear through couplets 1', 7', 8' but couplet 9 is ambiguous...and P. corymbosa can be reached by choosing either 9 or 9', while only 9' can lead to P. imbricata. I suspected this is imbricata, but since (ignoring range) it wasn't totally clear, I also consulted Munz, Abrams, and the 1960 monograph The Phacelia magellanica Polyploid Complex by Lawrence Heckard. All the treatments seem to agree on the relatively wide calyx lobes here pointing to P. imbricata, which is consistent with this locale being out of range for P. corymbosa based on the literature. Also, there is a record in Heckard of P. imbricata ssp. imbricata from 'Adobe Creek Canyon' which is a tributary of Del Puerto Canyon very near to where the photo here was taken. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
