notes I'm pretty sure (though not certain) this is Astragalus lentiginosus var. nigricalycis. Fruit would have been helpful...but the low habit; black hairs on the calyces; and fairly good fit with the description in Barnaby's classic 'Atlas of NA Astragalus' reinforce my confidence. Barnaby's description can be found at this link. (You'll have to zoom in to read it...the NYBG text-browser is a bit cumbersome to use.) There is also a CCH record of A. lentiginosus var. nigricalycis from Monocline Ridge by Jeff Greenhouse from 3/29/03. My other initial candidates, A. oxyphysus and A. asymmetricus grow in the general area, but are much more erect and robust. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
