plant community Arctic tundranotes Range: Circumpolar. Occurs in the arctic–alpine zones on tundra, alpine meadows, stream edge, near snowbeds; 0–4250 ft (0–1300 m). ID: Height 3–8 in (7.5–20 cm). Tufted. Smooth or pubescent, erect stems, each with a single flower. Leaves: Basal, persistent or deciduous, smooth, reniform, cleft into 3–5 lobes, side segments again lobed or with toothed margins; stem leaves 1–3, sessile. Flowers: yellow, with 5 petals and 5 smaller sepals covered with brown downy hairs; flowers variable in size. Blooms Jun-Aug. Fruit: Seedhead cylindrical, smooth.
