notes Habit of Hecastocleis shockleyi. Some may find this to be just another non-descript desert shrub, but to me it will always be a uniquely fascinating and cherished species. I first stumbled upon it on June 5, 2001 and was mystified...unable to place it to family. It couldn't be a comp I figured, since there weren't numerous flowers clustered per involucre. But searching through Jaeger's ''Desert Wildflowers'' I came upon 'Prickle-leaf' and checking the Jepson Manual I learned that this was indeed a comp with 1 flower per involucre! That struck me as so strange and delightful! I've never seen another member of the Asteraceae with that remarkable distinction.photo category: Plant - shrub
