INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 28, 2012
  • location   Toiyabe National Forest. Near Bridgeport (Mono County, California, US)
  • notes   Wheeler Peak (elev. 11,664 ft.) and Mount Patterson (11,673 ft.) are the two most prominent peaks in the Sweetwater Mountains along the California-Nevada border. The core of the range is composed of Cretaceous granitic plutons similar to those of the Sierra 20 miles to the west. These colorful barren peaks are the result of late Miocene rhyolitic intrusions in the granite core that created rhyolite domes and clastic flows.
