  • location   Lone Pine (Inyo County, California, US)
  • notes   This scarp on the Lone Pine Fault was created by the Magnitude 8 earthquake centered near Lone Pine in the Owens Valley of California in 1872. The quake, one of the largest in the state in modern times, opened a surface rupture that extended for 130 milies. It leveled nearly all of the buildings in Lone Pine and killed 23 of the town's 250-300 inhabitants. The quake triggered rockslides in Yosemite Valley 110 miles away that were described by John Muir. Just outside Lone Pine, the trace of the fault crossed this alluvial fan. The vertical displacement created this scarp which is about 15-20 feet high. After a centrury and half of erosion, the scarp has been only slightly softened.
