INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Oct 1, 2012
  • location   BLM Ayers Rock Site. Coso Range. East of Coso Junction (Inyo County, California, US)
  • notes   The Native Americans who occupied this site created pictographs on the large rock. Area has been occupied for at least the last 600-800 years by Piute and Shoshone. Although there is no source of high-quality obsidian nearby, the ground at this site is dense with black glass flakes generated by tool-makers. They carried the obsidian here from elsewhere and used it to make arrowheads or spear tips.
