  • notes   Mount Hayden at Sunrise from Point Imperial. The light unit forming the pillar is the Coconino Sandstone (Permian). The Hermit Shale (Permian) forms the slope just below the Coconino. These pyramidal buttes are features formed as a result of headward erosion by small tributaries to the Colorado River.
