  • date of photo  Sep 12, 2012
  • location   Yosemite National Park (Mariposa County, California, US)
  • notes   When the magma that became the El Capitan Granite was intruded into this area from deep in the earth during Cretaceous time 102 million years ago, it flowed through older layers of diorite and carried along large blocks of this late Jurassic or early Cretaceous diorite. Pillow-sized blocks of the diorite are now weathering out of the younger granite in the area around Cascade Creek close to the Merced River.
