  • notes   Habitat and habit of Castilleja wightii, the most common species of coastal paintbrush in the San Francisco peninsula area. Other common coastal scrub plants in the image include California Sage (Artemisia californica) at lower right to middle; Coyote Brush (Baccharis piluloides) at lower left and elsewhere; and Lizard-tail (Eriophyllum staechadifolium) the yellow-flowered, ball-headed plant at right-middle. The perspective in this photo is a bit misleading...it was taken at 300' above sea level, with the cliff-side edge visible above the swells being about 115' above sea level.
